Foundations Firm Sunday School and Bible Study lessons are designed to teach foundational truths from the most basic through the fairly complex. An effort has been made to use simple words and explanations so that teachers who are missionaries in areas where they must use a translator should have little or no trouble with their translator understanding. This means that any person with at least a third grade education should be able to understand. But if you read and do not understand, what good has been done for you? As always we seek to be exactly and completely accurate in teaching those things which are most surely taught by our Lord Jesus Christ and His original Apostles, and including the Apostle Paul. In his epistle, Jude says in verses 3 and 4, “Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in unawares,* who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and [this and is more correctly translated: even] our Lord Jesus Christ.” And the Apostle Paul exhorts the Galatian believers, “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.” (Galatians 1:6-9). It is on the basis of these scriptures that we must reject as heretical those doctrines brought in by later religious leaders, many of whom became leaders in the church during the Third and Fourth Centuries after having been trained in pagan religions which they brought into the church. The series is undated, allowing the teacher to begin at any time and to take more than one class session for any lesson of special interest to that particular class. PURPOSE
NEW converts are new-born babes in Christ. It is of vital importance that they be fed sound Bible doctrines if they are to grow into strong, mature Christians. Their spiritual foundations must also be laid strong and sure. With so many different doctrines and “plans of salvation,” it becomes vitally important to know what Bible Doctrines really are. In this series, we are attempting to establish firmly in the minds of Bible students that plan of salvation taught and practiced by those who had walked and talked with Jesus daily. Our goal is to restore the New Testament Church in its teachings, ordinances, life and power. We firmly believe that God desires to communicate His plan and purpose for human lives and to do so, has given us His Word in the form we call the Bible. Every word of the Bible is inspired, but to be rightly understood, must be kept in the context in which it was written. We must study the Bible as a textbook which says what it means. No Science teacher takes a paragraph from a science textbook and uses it out of context to contradict everything else that textbook says, but Bible teachers often take scriptures totally out of context to prove what the Apostle Paul calls, “another Gospel” than that which the Apostles learned at Jesus feet and taught. He goes further and says of these false teachers, “…let them be accursed” (Galatians 1:6-8). And John says, “If there come any unto you and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed; for he that biddeth him God speed is a partaker of his evil deeds” (2 John 9). In today’s modern world, man is not often concerned about eternity . But there is a power for daily living if we are turned on to the powerhouse of God’s Holy Spirit.True “believers ” today still practice the same doctrines and enjoy the same vibrant, fulfilling, thrilling life as the believers in the first church at Jerusalem. Remember that the writers of the New Testament were so used to the Old Testament and its historical facts, laws and the prophets that they often said things which cannot possibly be correctly understood by anyone who is not at least acquainted with the Old Testament. If this doctrine seems contrary to the teaching of the church, look up church history to discover if and when a change was made in that doctrine. A rule we apply to every doctrinal scripture is to ask the following four questions:
1. Who is speaking?
2. To whom is he speaking?
3. Is the author of that verse of scripture the person speaking, or is he quoting someone else?
4. Is that particular passage an unsolicited instruction, or is it a specific answer to a specific question?
Example: I Corinthians 7:1. “Now concerning the things whereof ye wrote unto me…” The Apostle Paul goes on to answer their questions rather directly as their overpastor in the next several chapters. In verses 6 and 12, He was not giving commandments directly from the Lord to people who were not already concerned with pleasing the Lord Jesus. But in verse 10, he does give a command from the Lord.
